This episode explores why finishing second can feel worse than third, using a famous Olympic study to unpack counterfactual thinking and the psychology of comparison. It also offers practical ways to reframe setbacks, stay creative, and protect momentum without losing ambition.

Chapter 1

The Silver Medalist Paradox: Why Second Place Feels Worse Than Third

Jordan Sterling

Welcome to the PTT Music Podcast, where music is more than entertainment. It's a powerful force for inspiration, creativity, and positive influence. I'm Jordan Sterling, professional positive behavior therapist, here with Ava Brooks. In every episode, we dive into how purposeful sound and proven behavioral techniques can inspire confidence, strengthen your mind, and fuel your momentum. Whether you're returning or joining us for the first time, welcome to the community.

Ava Brooks

Welcome, everyone! We're so glad you're here with us. As positive behavior therapists, Jordan and I are passionate about showing how intentional sound and proactive mental framing elevate daily life. The core purpose of the PTT Music Podcast is to take you behind the music, exploring the creative journeys and psychological strategies that empower you to thrive, celebrate every achievement, and live with purposeful energy.

Jordan Sterling

Today we're exploring how high performers sustain genuine joy in their achievements using evidence based positive behavior techniques. Ava, you were looking at a classic psychological study on how people evaluate their victories.

Ava Brooks

Yes, exactly. I was reviewing that famous 1995 study by Victoria Medvec, Scott Madey, and Thomas Gilovich, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. They analyzed the immediate facial expressions of Olympic athletes right when they won their medals at the 1992 Barcelona Games.

Jordan Sterling

That study's such a fascinating look at human psychology and how we process high achievement.

Ava Brooks

It really is. On a scale from one to ten, with one being absolute agony and ten being pure joy, bronze medalists scored an average of seven point one right after competing. Silver medalists scored an average of four point eight.

Jordan Sterling

That data shows us how powerful cognitive framing is when evaluating our accomplishments. As experts in positive behavior, understanding how people frame success gives us the tools to maintain pure joy and fulfillment in every achievement.

Ava Brooks

Exactly. Psychologists call it counterfactual thinking. When people look upward at what could've been slightly different, they miss the incredible magnitude of what they actually accomplished. But when we anchor ourselves in gratitude for the victory right in front of us, our joy increases exponentially.

Jordan Sterling

That's the heart of positive behavior training. Instead of letting upward comparisons diminish your momentum, you can choose to focus on the incredible milestone you just reached. Standing on any podium in life's a massive win that deserves full celebration.

Ava Brooks

In creative work, like songwriting, arrangement, and audio production, keeping that proactive, positive mindset's everything. Every time you complete a track or bring a new idea into reality, you've created something meaningful that moves people forward.

Jordan Sterling

Right. Completing a creative project's a monumental success. When artists celebrate every milestone with unshakeable confidence, they build unstoppable momentum for their next breakthrough.

Chapter 2

Shifting the Lens: How Downward Reframing Anchors Momentum

Ava Brooks

To keep yourself locked into that vibrant mindset, we advocate for a practice called the victory audit. The moment you achieve a goal, you immediately list three powerful ways you grew and succeeded through the process.

Jordan Sterling

That's such an empowering practice. You declare with clarity, I mastered a new level of excellence, I expressed my creative vision with complete authenticity, and I created real value that impacts lives. That immediately fills your mind with inspiration and purpose.

Ava Brooks

And pairing that proactive focus with powerful, uplifting music takes your energy even higher. Music reinforces positive cognitive pathways and anchors your mind in strength and momentum. That brings to mind the PTT Music track, "Rise Above." When that driving production and inspiring vocal soar, it acts as an immediate physical trigger for confidence and clarity.

Jordan Sterling

"Rise Above" is a perfect example of sound with purpose. It immediately lifts your perspective and reminds you of your capacity to elevate above any circumstance. And that pairs seamlessly with the brand new PTT Music release called "Hurt." What's remarkable about "Hurt" from a positive behavior perspective is how it takes past challenges and transforms them entirely into unshakeable inner resilience and triumphant growth. It reminds listeners that every single trial's simply fuel for greater strength and higher achievement.

Ava Brooks

"Hurt" delivers such a commanding message of victory. When those dynamic rhythms and empowering melodies drop, they act as an instantaneous sonic anchor alongside "Rise Above," locking your mind into confidence and proving how powerfully we can turn any test into our greatest testimony.

Jordan Sterling

It really demonstrates how intentional music and positive behavior training work in total harmony. Striving for high standards is wonderful, but celebrating every victory keeps your spirit vibrant, confident, and fueled for long term success.

Ava Brooks

True achievement's about owning your wins with pride, gratitude, and purpose. When we celebrate our progress, every accomplishment becomes a solid foundation for our next big triumph.

Jordan Sterling

That proactive perspective turns every moment into fuel for inspiration. Keeping our thoughts centered on joy, strength, and continuous achievement empowers us to bring our absolute best to everything we do.

Ava Brooks

And that's the essence of positive behavior: taking total ownership of our mindset, surrounding ourselves with motivating music, and choosing to thrive every step of the way.

Jordan Sterling

Well said, Ava. Celebrating our achievements and carrying that high energy into every project creates a powerful momentum that inspires everyone around us.

Ava Brooks

It's been fantastic exploring these positive mindset strategies together today.
